At present Verzal is a small, enthusiastic team with occasional external help. Though the brand is young, we have more than a decade of experience in designing visual identities and websites.

How Verzal Was Born

It was November 2020, we were just getting into another period of depression because the country had just been shut down again because of the virus. I was doing my last semester at the METU typography course (I’m obsessed with life-long learning) and I had to get used to online education again, missing out on all the personal classes that would have been really good to attend in person. We couldn’t go to the super printing press our teacher had found for us, and we also had to cancel the visit to the studio. (And nothing is more exciting than watching others do what you do, or even learning from them…)

As compensation, we received a 3-hour Friday online course from the art director of one of the major Hungarian agencies. It seemed cold comfort… It started with a few problems, the internet connection wasn’t perfect and we couldn’t see him, only what he shared on the screen. He cut into what he had to say. I felt it after a few minutes. It took some more time and I knew with startling clarity: I wouldn’t be able to work the way I had before (I had been designing brand identities, packaging, creating websites for the past 5 years as a freelancer). Have you felt something like this before? That certain AHA-moment! It was electrifying to see and hear him talk, I was sure a new life would begin.

I watched the recording of his talk several times. I still had to finish my degree projects. As soon as we graduated, I immediately threw myself into the subject. I spent hundreds of thousands again on studying and books… 

There have been signs in the past that I needed this: I had projects where my client was simply not aware of who they or their business was, what their values ​​are, what foundations they were building the business on. This way, it was very difficult to work and build the identity on “nothing”, design something that is accepted solely by personal preferences.

Quite slowly, in months, the new methodology came together. The brand strategy of our own company has been put together. Our vision has crystallized – yes, I write this in the plural because one of the big tasks for the coming period will be to build a professional team.

Why Verzal?

As a typographer, I wanted a brand name that has something to do with typography (besides being short, striking, and expressive). When months ago I was checking the available domain names that belonged to my ideas, I was quite shocked to see that verzal.hu was unregistered. Fate/God/the Universe sent it to me. I pounced on it right away. 🙂
